Economic development professionals, together with Nevada business leaders and policy makers from across the state, will gather August 21 and 22 at the Tuscany Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas to attend workshops and seminars on important economic diversification topics. What's Up in Economic Development

Commission Meetings -- The July meeting of the Nevada Commission on Economic Development was held on July 9, 2003. The next meeting of the Commission will be held August 13, 2003, by teleconference at Legislative Counsel Bureau offices in Las Vegas and Carson City.

News Nuggets -- A few Nevada business stories in brief:

* Las Vegas Review-Journal Washington correspondent Steve Tetreault recently profiled Nevada federal liaison Mike Pieper and examined the Nevada approach to involvement in Washington, D. C., based initiatives and issues. Click here to read the entire story.

* Las Vegas Review-Journal staffer Hubble Smith reports that Las Vegas ranks No. 2 among the nation's top 20 best-performing cities in a report released today by the Milken Institute. The report, "Where America's Jobs are Created," noted Las Vegas has been successful despite a difficult environment for a travel and tourism destination. The story quotes John Restrepo, principal of Restrepo Consulting Group in Las Vegas, saying: "The Milken report verifies that Las Vegas is indeed seeing economic diversification beyond the gaming industry. It may be slow, but surely it is happening. Gaming employment as a percentage of the total employment has been relatively constant over the last few years." Click here to read the entire story.

* The Las Vegas Sun reports that Allegiant Air, which has its administrative headquarters in Las Vegas but has kept its operations center in Fresno, Calif., will consolidate to one headquarters in Las Vegas later this year. Eventually about 45 employees will make the move to Las Vegas. Click here to read the entire story.

* Writer Philipp Harper said he "parsed and sifted and sorted and compared a whole bunch of data assiduously collected by some very talented researchers," then added his own criteria to develop Microsoft bCentral's list of the 10 best and 10 worst states in which to be an entrepreneur. According to the recent Harper article, the hands-down winner as the best state is Nevada.

* The Las Vegas Review-Journal recently reported that Trammell Crow, a major developer of industrial space nationwide, is entering the Las Vegas market with the 420,000-square-foot Cheyenne Distribution Center under construction at Cheyenne Avenue and Lamb Boulevard. Grading has begun on the $8.5 million first phase of the cross-dock facility and the first building shell is expected to be completed in November. Click here to read the entire story.

* EDAWN (Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada) sponsored the recent successful application of Taiyo America, Inc., to receive Foreign Trade Subzone status. The Carson City-based manufacturer is the first Nevada company approved as a subzone by a board administered by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce.

* The community of Fallon will see phase one construction begin this month on New River Business Park. A road and other business park infrastructure are part of phase one on 42 of the 132 acres the city purchased. The majority of the project costs will be paid with a federal grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration. The city worked for three years to secure the grant.

* The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that a recent study from the National Association of Manufacturers states that Nevada stands alone in generating jobs in manufacturing. Employment shrank in all other states from July to December 2002, while Nevada's workforce grew by 1,400 jobs.

Made in Nevada -- The 72nd Session of the Nevada Legislature saw NCED's Made in Nevada at the center of attention with an exhibit in the atrium of the Legislative Building in Carson City. The Made in Nevada program provides opportunities for both members and buyers. Investment Guide -- The Nevada Investment Guide for Japanese Companies, a collaborative effort of the NCED, Kaji & Associates and UNLV, helps target Japanese companies in California and Japan. The guide, one-part survey results and one-part marketing tool, was completed after the NCED determined that nearly 30 percent of all foreign companies with operations in Nevada are Japanese owned.

Film Office Success -- The NCED's Nevada Film Office reported a record-breaking fiscal year. Highlights include surpassing all previous calendar and fiscal year production revenues, achieving #1 status in the five-state southwest region of Film Commissions, and seeing Las Vegas ranked as one of the top ten filming locations in North America.
